Style Conversion Limitations and Problems
November 22, 2008
The SFF2 style format was introduced with Tyros 3, and has now only been available in a few weeks. There are several changes in the format which make it impossible to run the new style format in other keyboards than Tyros 3.
One change is a dramatic redefinition of the structure of the essential CASM data. An official format definition of these data is not (and have never been) public - and thus not known to me.
But using my 9 years of CASM programming experience, I have now revealed some parts of the SFF2 style CASM format for use in a SFF2 style format converter software. However there most probably are something yet to be discovered. This lack of accurate official information may result in faulty style file conversions. Therefore always work on copies of the style files.
As the old style format does not support the new features; it is not possible to convert the new styles 100% correct. This means that in the conversion process some settings are deleted; and some are replaced by default data. This will change the "sound" of the style.
Consider this software program as a converter which makes it technically possible to run SFF2 (Tyros 3) styles on older models. And realize that the style might need some tweaking after conversion. To tweak the style: Please read in the left column of this page!
Please report any unexpected program behavior. And please report any ideas for improvements to the program's functions. My mail address is in the upper right corner of this page. Thank you!
